NAPLAN questions parents actually ask
Straight answers, without the education-department language. Each one stands on its own, so skip to the question you came for.
Dates, proficiency levels and preparation
When is NAPLAN in 2027?
The 2027 test window is Wednesday 10 March to Monday 22 March 2027. Schools schedule the four tests inside that window, and Writing has to be scheduled for the first day. Most schools finish in the first week, so confirm the exact days with your school rather than a national site.
What are the NAPLAN proficiency levels, and what happened to bands?
Since 2023 each result is reported at one of four proficiency levels. Strong means your child is meeting the expectation for their year level, Developing means they are working towards it, and the level below that means they are likely to move faster with targeted support first. The old Band 1 to 10 system and the National Minimum Standard were both retired in 2023, so any advice you read about bands is out of date.
Is a Developing result bad?
It is a flag, not a verdict. Developing means your child is below the year-level expectation in that area right now. Nationally in 2025, around 32% of Year 5 students were below the Strong level on ACARA's own figures, so it is common. What matters is the response: name the specific gap and work on it, because the same skills are tested again two years later.
Does NAPLAN actually matter?
There is no pass or fail and it does not appear on any certificate. It matters for what it reveals and where that information goes. Parents get an independent check on year-level progress that does not depend on one teacher's judgement, and some high schools look at NAPLAN results when forming classes or allocating support. The healthiest framing for your child is that it is a check-up, not an exam you can fail.
Why did my child get different questions from their friend?
Because NAPLAN is adaptive. After each section the test chooses the next set of questions based on how the student is going, so two children in the same room follow different pathways. If your child says the test got hard, that is usually good news: the test raises the difficulty for students who are answering well.
How is the writing test marked?
Against ten official criteria covering everything from spelling and punctuation to ideas and audience, out of 47 marks for a narrative prompt or 48 for a persuasive one. It is the only NAPLAN test not marked by counting right answers, which is why practising writing without a criterion-by-criterion mark misses most of what is being scored.
How do I help my child prepare without stressing them out?
Three things, in order. Make the format familiar, because a child who has seen on-screen, timed, NAPLAN-style questions before test day loses the surprise, which is the biggest source of stress. Find the actual gaps with a diagnostic instead of practising everything. And keep the framing light at home. Cramming content the week before does little, because NAPLAN tests skills built over years rather than facts.
Is this official NAPLAN content?
No. NAPLAN Expert is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by ACARA, and NAPLAN is a trademark of the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority. Every question is original, NAPLAN-style material written to match the real test's format and difficulty, and no official test items are reproduced. Anything official, from the test dates to the public demonstration tests, comes from ACARA directly at nap.edu.au.
